Groundbreaking for battery energy storage system in Hoexter (Germany)

Yesterday, we welcomed our investor and members of the local community to our new BESS project site in Hoexter (Lower Saxony, Germany) to officially break ground.

Joined by Mayor Daniel Hartmann, Jana-Christin Jungblut from Wirtschaftsförderung Höxter, Senior Investment Manager Nils Klatt from MEAG, as well as Project Manager Joas Schmidt and Project Developer Timo Roling from Altenso (from right to left), the event marked the symbolic start of construction for a grid-connected battery park with an output of 130 MW and a capacity of 354 MWh.

Construction begins in Hoexter

On the more than 23,000 square meter large site in the “Zur Lüre” industrial area, Altenso is beginning construction of the battery park, which will include a substation and high-voltage grid connection. The facility will feature 76 battery stations from BYD and 38 medium-voltage power stations, equipped with innovative battery inverters from SMA Solar Technology AG.

Battery Park Höxter sets new technological standards. It is among the first large-scale battery storage systems in Germany to use Sunny Central Storage UP-S battery inverters with SiC MOSFET technology. These innovative inverters offer excellent energy conversion efficiency, low noise emissions, and high durability.

Grid-scale batteries as a backbone of the energy transition

Once connected to the high-voltage grid, the plant will make a significant contribution to grid stability and the integration of renewable energy sources. Projects like this strengthen a sustainable power system that is mainly powered by solar, wind, and other renewable sources.

Altenso is implementing the BESS Hoexter under a general contractor agreement and will remain involved as the long-term maintenance partner. From development to construction and ongoing operations, Altenso is committed to upholding high standards of quality, safety, and reliability.

Altenso’s global BESS project pipeline

The company is advancing other storage projects in Germany and beyond. The BESS in Metelen, North Rhine-Westphalia, is expected to go into operation by the end of the year. Battery Park Einbeck is scheduled to reach grid connection in the first half of 2026.

In total, Altenso already delivered BESS projects totaling over 1.5 GW worldwide and maintains a multi-gigawatt project pipeline. Further references and state-of-the-art energy systems can be found in the relevant section of this website.
