A flagship project for solar-powered, off-the-grid hydrogen ecosystems
The project in Walvis Bay is Africa’s first integrated green hydrogen plant and a flagship project for solar-powered, off-the-grid hydrogen ecosystems. It demonstrates how industrial-scale renewable energy can be produced independently from the grid with high-quality solar PV, battery storage and green hydrogen components. Altenso has taken on a new and unique project scope: from delivering and commissioning medium-voltage power stations for PV and BESS, to installing a 40-foot rectifier system for solar-based electrolysis. The company has made a comprehensive contribution to enabling large-scale hydrogen production and efficient operations. The Hydrogen Dune plant belongs to CMB.TECH, a Belgian maritime group.

Altenso's energy management system
The central intelligence behind the entire plant is our energy management system. It combines forecasts for solar PV, hydrogen demand, and auxiliary loads with detailed digital models of the plant’s components.
It balances energy production with energy demand several days in advance, optimizing plant’s efficiency, and assuring energy availability in times of low or no PV power input. Everything operates as one smart, synchronized ecosystem which maximises the value of the plant by increasing output while reducing operational costs.
SMA System Technology
Our rectifiers are manufactured in a serial mass production in Niestetal (Germany). We keep highest production standards and deliver worldwide even to very remote and secluded locations.
